Lesson Plan:
Project 1: Pinch Pot Bowls
- Start by discussing different kinds of clay and where to buy it from, as well as pottery equipment, public studios, and starting a home studio.
- Preparing clay for projects, weighing clay with a scale for specific projects.
- Basics of making a pinch pot, focusing on control and slow movements. Demonstrate two different shaped pinch pots, showing the maneuver and techniques used to create different effects.
- Discuss drying clay and recycling clay for reuse.
Assignment: Make 3 stacking pinch pot bowls. They should stack on top of or inside each other nicely, without ruining their balance. Start with less than 1 lb of clay for each.
Project 2: Pinch Pot Mugs
- Focus on repeating shapes for a matching set.

- Stages of clay: introduce leatherhard, a stage used for attaching and decorative carving.

- Lots of attachment, scoring, and slipping every piece.

- Sealing all holes with clay, sealing all coils on the inside.
- Importance of slow drying.
Assignment: Make 1 medium coil bowl.
Project 4: Coil Pot Mug
- Use the same technique as for the bowl, just changing the shape.
- Try different sized coils.
- Smooth the inside for food-safe dishes.
- Discuss good handles vs bad handles.
- Compare basic design vs complicated design.
Assignment: Make 1 to 2 coil mugs.
Project 5: Slab Plate
- Roll out a proper slab with a rolling pin, mention a slab roller.
- No water! It will ruin the slab.
- Large surface area for decoration: stamps, painting, carving. Discuss the options.
- Use a shaping mold or just pinch the rim to get the shape.
- Foot ring for support and to eliminate shaping.
- Importance of slow drying.
Assignment: Make 2 identical or stacking plates.
Project 6: Slab Mugs
- Good attachment will lead to fewer leaks.
- Order of operations will matter: roll a big enough slab to make a decent-sized mug, cut all pieces, decorate, then attach.
- Balance with a good-sized handle, not too thin.
- Smooth edges.
- Explore different shapes.
Assignment: Make 2 matching slab mugs.
Project 7: Gnome
- Use known methods of handbuilding to assemble a new project.
- Decoration vs functional.

Project 8: Wind Chime
- Use slab, pinch pots, and coils to assemble a decorative and functional piece.
- Pay attention to detail and follow a plan (sketch beforehand).
- Extra materials needed to assemble.
- Watch the weight; it shouldn’t be too heavy.
Assignment: Make 1 wind chime.
Final Lesson: Glazing and Intro to Wheel Throwing
- Discuss what a glaze is and its purpose.
- Explore 3 different ways to glaze: painting glazes and dipping glazes.
- Firing temperatures.
- Knowing your materials.
- Studio firings or at-home firings.
Assignment: Glaze and fire all pieces! Assemble if needed. Enjoy them.
- Show the difference between finished products of handbuilding and wheel throwing.
- Prep clay and wheel setup, show different tools.
