PTE Part 1: Speaking & Writing: The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based language proficiency test that assesses a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English in an academic or professional setting. The test is divided into four parts: speaking and writing, reading, listening, and writing.
This part of the test is 54–67 minutes long and it contains seven different question types. It is the longest section of the test. Therefore, you will be tested on your speaking and writing skills, using English you might hear in an academic environment.
The Speaking and Writing section of the test contains an Introduction and six different question types which include Personal Introduction, Read aloud task, Repeat Sentence task, Describe an Image task, Re-tell Lecture, Answer the short question and Summarize Written Text.

Personal Introductions
The Personal Introduction is an opportunity for you to get familiar with PTE test technology and to help you prepare for your speaking and listening questions. This question does not contribute to your score and is for familiarization purposes only.
You will have 25 seconds to read the prompt and prepare your response, and then 30 seconds to record your response. You are only able to record your answer once.

Task 1 – Read Aloud
Task: Text appears on the screen. Read the text aloud.
The Read-Aloud section of the PTE requires you to read a short text aloud. This section assesses the candidate’s ability to read fluently, pronounce words correctly, and use appropriate intonation and stress. The candidate is given 30-40 seconds to prepare their response and 30-40 seconds to record their response.
Tips for reading Aloud:
- Use the preparation time to familiarize yourself with the text and identify any challenging words.

Task: After listening to a recording of a sentence, repeat the sentence.
The Repeat Sentence task is designed to evaluate your ability to listen to and understand spoken English as well as your ability to accurately reproduce what you have heard. In this task, you will hear a sentence spoken aloud and will be asked to repeat it exactly as you heard it.
Therefore, the sentences used in this task can range from short and simple to long and complex. They may include technical or specialized vocabulary, and they may be spoken at a normal or fast pace, depending on the level of difficulty of the test.
One of the challenges of this task is that you are only given one chance to hear the sentence, and you must then reproduce it immediately. Therefore, it is important to be alert and attentive during this task and to try to avoid distractions that may interfere with your ability to hear and understand the sentence.
