IELTS Speaking Part 1:Dictionaries: In this blog, we are going to look at some ideas and vocabulary for a new topic that  appeared in Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test. That is the topic of dictionaries.

 

Different Types of Dictionaries

I am sure you have used a dictionary but do you know how to describe different dictionaries well?  Let me give you some ideas so that you can give a good answer to your test.  Well of course we use dictionaries mainly to get a definition so that we can understand the word but let us look at another kind of dictionary that is:

 

Bilingual Dictionaries

 

A bilingual dictionary contains two languages, such as Vietnamese and English. This type of dictionary proves highly beneficial as it provides definitions in our native language, making it easier for us to comprehend the word’s meaning.

 

Thesaurus Dictionary

 

This dictionary is designed for synonyms. Synonyms are words that possess the same meaning. For instance, we can mention “food,” “meals,” and “dishes” as having similar meanings, and synonyms prove invaluable in expanding our vocabulary. Therefore, a thesaurus is a dictionary that includes synonyms, which are words sharing the same meaning. Additionally, the dictionary also provides antonyms. Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. For example, if the word is “hot,” a synonym could be “boiling,” while the antonym would be “cold.”

A thesaurus serves as an excellent dictionary for enhancing and enriching your vocabulary. I highly recommend acquiring an English Thesaurus as it will aid you in your IELTS speaking test, writing test, and all other sections of the IELTS Examination.

 

Online Dictionaries

 

I’m sure you have used the online dictionary at some point. The online dictionary provides definitions, synonyms, and antonyms. One advantage of the online dictionary is that you can often hear the pronunciation of a word by pressing a little button, which helps you with your speaking. This feature offers many advantages.

 

Electronic Dictionary

 

An electronic dictionary serves multiple functions. It includes features such as an encyclopedia, bilingual dictionaries, and monolingual dictionaries, which provide a wealth of knowledge. Also, these dictionaries are highly useful due to their convenience and portability. Being portable allows them to be easily carried in pockets, coats, or trousers. Hence, an electronic dictionary offers various functionalities, making it a convenient and lightweight tool to use.

Practice the new words you encountered in the above passage. In IELTS, there is another common topic besides dictionaries, and that is languages. A frequently asked question in language-related topics is about the tools used for language learning. Tools refer to objects or things that aid in language learning. Therefore, if you come across this question in the language topic, start incorporating some of the mentioned ideas and words, as they can help you achieve high band scores. Remember to practice pronouncing the words and actively using them.

Dictionaries are an invaluable tool for language learners. They serve as a comprehensive resource that can assist you in expanding your vocabulary, improving pronunciation, understanding word usage, and enhancing your overall language proficiency.
