CELPIP Master your Reading Tips! The CELPIP test assesses the test taker’s proficiency in four key areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In this blog, we will discuss four parts of CELPIP reading and focus on some tips to master the reading section of the CELPIP test.

What you do in CELPIP parts 1, 3 & 4 is quite similar part 2 is quite different

CELPIP Reading Part 1

Questions 1 & 2

Start by reading the questions, specifically questions 1 and 2. Look for the keywords in these questions and then search for them or related information in the passage. For example, if a keyword is “John,” look for information about John. If the question is about the success of the Boeing company, look for related sentences such as “profitable year” or “year of good reviews.” Answer questions 1 and 2 based on this information, and then proceed to answer questions 3 and 4 while keeping this concept in mind.

Note that everything in CELPIP is scattered, so you don’t know where to find the answer to a certain question. Therefore, you should read the questions first, get the keywords, and then go to the passage. If you read the passage first and then go to the questions, you will likely forget what you read.

As you do questions 1-6, which are multiple-choice questions, you will read the entire passage and gain a good idea of what the passage is about.

Questions 1-11

When it comes to response questions 7-11, you don’t need to go back up to the passage. Instead, you can answer based on your observations and what you remember from your first read-through of the entire passage. This is why you should initially read the passage in detail, devote about 70% of your time to it, and allocate 30% of your time to the response section. Since you have already read the entire passage and remembered the topic, you should be able to find the answers by looking at the response sentences and tone.

CELPIP Reading Part 4

In Part 4, you follow the same process as above. First, you look at the questions and then go up to the passage. For questions 1-5, you look at the multiple choices and search for the answer in the passage using the keywords from the questions. Once you have read everything, you move on to the comments from the other individual in questions 6-10. By doing this, you will be able to answer the questions automatically without going back to the passage.

Part 1 and Part 4 follow the same strategy and structure. The secret to Part 4 is to understand the argument so that you can figure out how the conversation flows. There are always two people fighting, with one person expressing an opinion and the other expressing a different opinion. Therefore, you need to pay attention to what they are arguing about and understand it, as the question will ask you about what one of them disagrees with.

When answering Part 4’s later questions, check who the third person backs. If pro, they’ll support positively. If negative, they’ll back negative talk. Understand their tone.

CELPIP Reading Part 3

In this part, you have questions that need to be matched with the paragraphs. To do this, you must read all the questions first because you don’t know which paragraph they could be in. Question 2 may be in paragraph 1, question 1 in paragraph 2 or anywhere else. Therefore, it is important to memorize everything as you read, and when you read the questions, you will be able to remember them as you go through the passage.

CELPIP Reading Part 2

This part is the most different one as it involves a picture. It is advised that you should not read the questions first but instead look at the picture. The reason for this is that the picture is a quick and concise collection of words and sentences, and you don’t have to spend much time reading it. By looking at the picture first, you can get very good ideas which can help you to answer the questions.

Keywords

When answering the questions, look at the keywords in the sentences, and then go up to the picture to match them.

When you reach the final part of part two, which includes questions 5-8 that relate to the first section of reading part 2. There is a letter format in which you answer the multiple choice questions that can be formatted as a paragraph. The other set of questions is based on that paragraph. Usually, questions 1-5 require further paragraphs in part 2, and questions 6-8 are based on those additional paragraphs.

The answers to questions 5, 6, 7, and 8 may not be explicitly stated in the first paragraph. For instance, if the first paragraph has ten sentences, and to answer the question, you need to read eight of them, then the last two sentences are unnecessary. This means that you only need to focus on the relevant information to answer the questions. What is most likely to happen is that those 9 and 10 sentences are going to help you find answers for the remaining questions which are the last three questions of part 2.  Note that whatever is missing and you did not pay attention to in the first part and section, pay attention to that in the next question.

Conclusion

In conclusion, mastering the reading section of the CELPIP test requires practice, focus, and dedication. By following the tips mentioned above, you can improve your reading skills and perform well in the reading section of the test.
